Deck the Halls with Dockers!

I was really REALLY excited when I had the opportunity to order an extra Christmas surprise for Mr. Bookworm! He is impossible to shop for because he is always telling me he doesn't need anything. But then, Santa whispered a little secret in my ear... Dockers® recently came out with an entire line of Game Day Khakis!

Be still my Bulldog heart!!

http://us.dockers.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=11162324&ab=home_GameDayF_11222013

Dockers® currently has 10 different college partners for this line including Louisiana State University, University of Minnesota, Oregon State University, Texas A&M University, University of Georgia, University of Illinois, University of Kentucky, University of Michigan, University of Missouri and Washington State University.

Can I mention that Dockers® obviously knows how big football and tailgating are in the SEC? 5 out of their 10 school come from my favorite conference!

http://us.dockers.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=11162324&ab=home_GameDayF_11222013

How much do you love the rally cry on the inseam!?

http://us.dockers.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=11162324&ab=home_GameDayF_11222013

And, if your man's heart belongs to school with a better basketball program, then these are just in time for you! (Ahem, Kentucky!)

http://us.dockers.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=11162324&ab=home_GameDayF_11222013

All 10 schools are available in the traditional Khaki pant and in the school's official color for a bolder look.

http://us.dockers.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=11162324&ab=home_GameDayF_11222013

How good is Mr. Bookworm going to look for the Gator Bowl?! We won't talk about how horrible our season was. We are going to be thankful for hot Mr. Bookworm pants and a bowl game to wear them to.

I love that he can wear the traditional Khakis to work and also have a pair for tailgating. I would be lying if I said I hadn't thought about giving the red pair to him early so he could wear them to a couple of parties we're going to this weekend. ;-)

Now I ordered Mr. Bookworm's pants online at Dockers.com, but I also saw them this week at Macy's when I was doing some Christmas shopping. Right now, Dockers® is having a sale for 30% off with the code GIFT30. They are also offering free shipping on all orders until December 19th.

I've got one more surprise to order for him tomorrow, but I'm curious - What are you getting for your significant other this Christmas??

Gingerbread, Pronouns, and a Freebie: OH MY!

We have been doing our best to stay focused in Room 3 in the last week or so, but I have a feeling this week is going to be a *bit* harder.

We started teaching pronouns shortly after we came back from Thanksgiving and my kids were struggling a bit when it came to choosing the correct pronoun for a given sentence. This is pretty typical for my ELL learners, but it did mean that I needed to find some new resources so that we could work in some extra practice.

We used a bunch of freebies from the fabulous Amy Lemons...

Oh Pronoun Tree, Oh Pronoun Tree!

This was definitely a class favorite. Both classes LOVED making a Christmas tree and I loved being able to differentiate which pronouns my students were using. I used my tee-tiny post it notes to hand out pronouns. This kept us from copying our neighbor's word or repeating the same pronoun over and over. It also let me challenge a couple of my kids with pronouns like myself and yourself

My kids are also going NUTS over a song I found on Pinterest from Mrs. Braun's 2nd Grade Class! I charted it out but they have been begging for a copy to keep in their Skills (Grammar) Notebook, so I thought I would share it with you all as well!

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/109427387/Pronoun%20Song.pdf
Click the picture to grab your own copy!

It's sung to the tune of "Spongebob Squarepants" and we have loved ending our morning meeting with a song for the day! :) Just click on the picture to grab it from Dropbox! One "twist" my kids have especially enjoyed is to have the boys and girls take turns singing the bold  and plain sections.

I also started using the revamped resources from my Gingerbread Goodies unit!

This is the first time in several years I've been able to use seasonal resources and I am SO excited! The kids have been pretty pumped too. We've been reviewing character traits and while I was at "teacher school" on Thursday, I had the sub read The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell. They loved it! I just found out there is also a sequel - The Gingerbread Girl Goes Animal Crackers (HA!) and it's on its way to our class via Amazon! You can check them out by clicking on the pictures below (affiliate links).

After they read the book, I asked them to write about one of the main characters in the story. We've had several lessons and discussions on how to write about the characters in our books, but I was pretty proud of the work they did!

Note to self: Work on using the word wall to spell because instead of just "cause"...

Love this kid.
I'm also printing off these games to use this week. I'm pulling one of them out on Wednesday for my observation, but I wanted to share it with you guys today!

This pack has 2 different classroom activities - one for the whole class and one for small groups or partners.
Whole group: There are 20 different task cards that I like to hang up around the room for the kids to find and answer. They are practicing the skill I need them to work on, but they are moving and getting some of the Candy Cane Crazies out at the same time!
I've also included a recording sheet and an extra practice page that you can use for homework, classwork, or even as an easy sub activity!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Go-Go-Gingerbread-A-Pronoun-Christmas-Pack-1022964

The second activity is a simple Concentration or Memory game with its own recording sheet. Students have to match the pronoun with the underlined noun or phrase on the sentence card. You can peek at the preview on TpT to see more of that game. :)

Make sure you are following my December Pinterest Board!

There are LOTS of freebie pins and I'll be pulling ideas from there all week. I have monthly Pinterest boards for the entire school year, so if you want to get a head start on the rest of the year give those a follow as well!

See you soon!

Festive Fact Practice {Winter Product Swap}

I've gotten together with some of my favorite blogger peeps to do a little product swapping just in time for winter!

http://t11w.blogspot.com/2013/12/gingerbread-gingerbreadand-product-swap.html

I was extra excited when I found out that I was going to be paired up with the amazing Fern Smith again! Who gets that lucky twice?! This girl!! :)

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas

Last time, I got to try out two of her fraction benchmark games with my kiddos. This time she sent me three of her multiplication and division games that are PERFECT for December!

My teaching partner and I have changed up our morning work routine this year. We used to have the kids come in and work on a daily morning work page. The kids were stressed out because they didn't always arrive in time to complete it and we were stressed out because we didn't have time to go over it. (We're departmentalized, so time is precious!!)

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thirteen-Christmas-Multiplication-Division-Mixed-Center-Games-Bundled-407282
Simple, seasonal, and so much fun!!

We made the executive decision to stop being stressed. However, we knew we still had to find a way to get the kids into the day's routine and review concepts we had already covered. What better way to do this than with games?!

We decided we would use games the kids had already played in class + new games with simple instructions they could learn on their own.

Enter Fern and her fabulous self.

When I tell you that my kids were OVER THE MOON about these games on Monday morning, I am not kidding.  Not even a little bit.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thirteen-Christmas-Multiplication-Division-Mixed-Center-Games-Bundled-407282

When I tell you that they were easy to prep, I am drop dead serious. I printed, laminated, and then the kids cut them out! How easy is that?!?!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thirteen-Christmas-Multiplication-Division-Mixed-Center-Games-Bundled-407282I love that there are a different set of cards for each group of facts. This makes it incredibly easy to find the "home" for a stray card.

Each game has a cover sheet, game cards, and student friendly directions.

The kids are loving that they can focus on the facts they need the most practice with, and we love that they are practicing their facts!!

Even better, M loves that she can leave these out as an early finisher or a sub activity. We've got several training days this month (Whose crazy idea was that?!) and the kids are going to love having some extra time to play with these!

You get 13 division and multiplication games for $10.00. There are over 200 pages in the bundle, so that's less than ten cents a page! You can't beat that!!

If you're looking for a fun (but less expensive!) way to bring a little Christmas cheer into your classroom, you've got to check out Fern's favorite Christmas freebie as well!

Deck the Halls with TpT!

I'm sure you've heard by now that TpT is having their annual Cyber Monday Sale on December 2nd! I can't wait!!

Courtesy of Krista at Creative Clips!
Today, I'm linking up with some of my favorite blogger peeps at Bunting, Books, and Bainbridge to bring you...

bainbridgeclass.blogspot.com/2013/12/deck-the-halls-with-tpt-linky-party.html

Check out the "playlist" Christina put together!

I've got a few "tunes" I want to share with you today!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Playing-With-Prefixes-145804

My kiddos especially love the poem I wrote for this unit. We were working with it just before Thanksgiving, and we *may* have used it for a few brain breaks during the week.

They loved reading it in different voices (a baby, a teenager, a granny) and it really started to build their reading fluency. I'm looking forward to using other poems the same way when we go back this week.

I think I'll even start with the poems I've got in this next "tune"...

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Gingerbread-Literacy-Goodies-468250

I listed this fun pack just after the holidays last year, but my kids and I had a blast using it! I'm "dreaming" of how easy it will be to review nouns and verbs with the sentence sort on Monday as a quick grammar lesson. We will start reading our large collection of gingerbread stories this week as well, so you will see our reading responses pop up soon, too!

Last, but not least:

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplication-Connection-A-Fact-Fluency-Game-626396

This time of year seems to be "crunch time" for our kiddos in terms of fact fluency. As part of their morning work for the next few weeks, my kids will be able to practice their facts with these easy-prep games! It seriously took me 10 minutes to print, laminate, trim, and find my game chips. What I love is that because they are so easy to prepare, my kids can work on whatever facts they need the most practice with right now - addition (2 levels) or multiplication (2 levels).

I'm hoping to add more boards to these as well in the next couple of weeks - be on the lookout!

Alright, bookworms! I'm off to go "organize" my wishlist and sip on some coffee with my sweet Mama and Daddy. I have been at "home" for a few days and I am soaking up every second I can in the North Carolina mountains!

Make sure you check out the rest of the playlists over at Bunting, Books, and Bainbridge!

Soda Pop Head: Taming Tempers {A FREEBIE!}

One of my favorite additions this year to our daily routine has been our morning meeting. No matter what kind of mood we all arrive in, we leave our meeting with a smile. It is the perfect way to start our day. On Mondays when our regular schedule is off-track due to an early library visit,  I extend our meeting with a read-aloud or an activity.

One of my favorite ways to "extend" our time together is with one of Julia Cook's books. Today, I'm joining Laura Candler at Corkboard Connections to share a few ways I've been able to use Julia's books in our morning meetings.

http://corkboardconnections.blogspot.com/2013/11/juliacook.html
Click for more ideas!

So far this year, we've used My Mouth is a Volcano, The Worst Day of My Life Ever, and my new, all-time Julia Cook favorite...

This year, I have not 1, not 2, but THREE kiddos who get a bit explosive animated when they get angry. After about 2 weeks of talking about being proactive until I was blue in the face, I started looking for books and activities that addressed ways to help kids cope with their anger. Because here's the thing:

Everybody gets angry. Our kids are going to be angry. And it's OK. We have to let them know it's how they deal with their anger that makes all the difference.

I'm not saying this book cured all of our anger issues - that would be totally unreasonable. :) But, it did open the door in a comfortable way for us to talk about dealing with anger at school. And I DID see some lightbulbs "click" when I read through it. Soda Pop Head has also made it's way into several book totes so far this year.

I can't leave you without letting you know about the activities I "fancied up" before sharing them with you as a FREEBIE!

My kids love using story sorts in our morning meetings. They create such good discussions, and I wrote these based on a few common "complaints" I've heard and seen over the last couple of months. :) I've also included a couple of writing responses your kids can use to think a little more about how they can handle their anger in the future.

I hope this finds you looking forward to your Thanksgiving break! Make sure you click through to the links below to check out all of the other ways my blogger buddies are using Julia Cook's incredible books!

Favorite November Read Alouds: The Ugly Pumpkin!

I'm linking up with the amazing Jen at The Teacher's Cauldron to share some of my favorite Thanksgiving books with you!

http://theteacherscauldron.blogspot.com/2013/11/favorite-thanksgiving-books-linky.html

I love to find books that will give my kids and I a good giggle, and 2 of my all-time favorite laugh-out-loud funny books are in my Thanksgiving tub!

Oh my goodness.

Seriously. These books are must-reads in our classroom every year.

Sometimes I'm pretty sure I think the books are funnier than the kids do, but eventually they start to see things my way. ;-)

We've been working with The Ugly Pumpkin all week long! You can check out this post to see how I've used it in the past.

Last week, we started using my new unit to dig a little deeper!
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Ugly-Pumpkin-A-Common-Core-Book-Companion-968618

After a looking at character traits for a couple of weeks, my kids were starting to confuse a character's actions with their traits. We stopped and spent a day on just the character's actions. Then we built on the character's motivation, and on the 3rd day we added character traits back in. It was magical!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Ugly-Pumpkin-A-Common-Core-Book-Companion-968618

They also did really well with a retelling prompt response I left with my sub last Thursday. There are some interactive notebook resources that mimic the long response page that I would've liked to use, but with DRAs coming up again I thought it would be better for them to practice this way. :)

My kids will continue to work on it this week as well. I LOVE that I can use this book all month long!

I've marked it down half price until Tuesday night. If you like what you see, make sure you grab it! :)
